Five ways to stay safe online this summer

Term may be quieter, but criminals do not take a break. Here are five simple things worth doing before you head off.

Be careful on public Wi-Fi

Hotel, airport and cafe networks are convenient but rarely secure. Avoid logging into anything sensitive while connected to them, and use your phone’s mobile data instead if you need to.

Update before you travel

Run any pending updates on your laptop and phone before you leave. Patching a device over a slow hotel connection is nobody’s idea of a holiday.

Watch out for holiday scams

Fake booking confirmations, parcel delivery notices and last minute travel deals all spike over the summer. If a message creates urgency, slow down and check it properly.

Turn on multi-factor authentication

If you have been meaning to set it up, now is the time. It takes two minutes and stops most account takeovers, even if someone gets hold of your password.

Back up anything important

Devices get lost, stolen and dropped in swimming pools. A recent backup turns a disaster into an inconvenience.

If something does go wrong while you are away, report it as soon as you can. Our incident report form works from anywhere.
